Seasonal vegetation (NDVI) and rainfall
(RFE) charts allow a visual analysis and comparison of the current-year growing season with respect to previous years and the long-term historical average. The NDVI long-term average is derived from 1982-2000 data; the rainfall average is calculated from station data from 1920-1980. There is no long-term rainfall average for Madagascar.
Polygons are defined by crop (maize or millet) and country. The map server allows you to zoom and/or pan to the desired region of Africa using the icon buttons at the top of the map. To obtain vegetation and rainfall charts, select the desired crop zone using the "Graph" icon button (2nd icon from the right).
The seasonal chart portrays the spatial mean of the selected crop zone, and provides a time series graph for the current growing season, along with time series for the previous growing season and the long-term historical average for comparison.
